Care To Be Taken For The Use Of Tanning Lotions

By Julia Suarez

Self tanning lotions have the potential to scare people off if not used properly. First timers often end up with streaked skin and orange palms because of the lack of experience with the lotion.

Once you get the hang of it however, these self tanning lotions come in quite useful especially during the summers.

Learn How To Apply Correctly

These self tanning lotions can be quite complicated in its application which can create strange effects on the skin. This leads to skin problems like streaking of the skin. The real understanding lies in the technique of application and not the quality of product.

Getting To Know DHA

Self tanning lotions have a chemical called Dihydroxyacetone or DHA. This chemical produces uneven marks on the top-most layer of the skin after an hour or so of its application.

If the application of this tanning lotion is faulty in the beginning itself, you will not be able to control the speed at which the process proceeds and there will be uncontrollable though temporary damage done to the skin layer called stratum corneum.

Avoid streaking

The biggest problem that people face when making use of self tanning lotions is that of streaking. The skin resembles the coat of a tiger with a mixture of dark and light colored stripes. The problem lies in the fact that you have to ready your skin prior to applying the self tanning lotion.

Before applying tanning lotion

People generally do not understand the harmful effects that a tanning lotion can cause to the skin. Precautions have to be taken like moisturizing and exfoliating the skin before you apply the self tanning lotions. Any sort of carelessness can lead to streaking.

The best way to escape the streaking is to exfoliate your skin every morning in the shower prior to applying the tanning lotion. The exfoliating product should be used a number of days prior to the use of the tanning lotion and not just before it

Men can also shave a couple of days ahead of the tanning process as it is another way of skin exfoliation. The intervals, however, needs to be equivalent to the time used for exfoliating by other means.

Be slow!

When it comes to the actual act of applying the tanner then you need to be extremely gentle to begin with. Work your way slowly making sure you rub the product into the skin completely. - 30414
